The problem
Eleven-year-old cedar on a marsh-facing elevation had cupped and shed paint in sheets. Constant salt aerosol, no drainage plane behind the cladding, and a gutter discharging against the wall had softened sheathing under two windows.
What we did
Compromised sheathing replaced, taped water-resistive barrier with a drainage plane installed, HardiePlank ColorPlus run to the high-wind fastening schedule, kick-out and head flashing added at every termination, gutter discharge rerouted.
Result
The wall now drains instead of holding water. Finish is covered for 15 years, board for 30, and our workmanship warranty sits on top of both.

What the marsh does to a wall

Marsh-front elevations on Daniel Island get a combination almost nothing else in the Lowcountry gets: constant salt aerosol, long humid stretches with no drying wind, and wind-driven rain arriving flat rather than falling. Cedar handles two of those. It does not handle all three at once with no drainage plane behind it.

The tell was the paint. It was lifting in sheets rather than chalking, which means moisture was pushing out from behind the coating instead of UV breaking it down from the front. That reads as a water management problem, not a paint problem, and repainting would have bought about eighteen months.

Why the gutter mattered more than the siding

A downspout was discharging within a foot of the wall. Every rain event put a concentrated volume of water at the base of an elevation that already stayed damp, and the sheathing under two windows had gone soft as a result.

We rerouted the discharge away from the wall before a single board went up. Replacing cladding without fixing the water source is how a re-side fails twice — that is the kind of thing we scope as part of the siding job, because we work the whole exterior rather than one trade.

The assembly we built back

Compromised sheathing came out and got replaced at the per-sheet rate quoted before tear-off. Over the repaired deck we ran a taped water-resistive barrier with a drainage plane, so anything that gets past the cladding has a path down and out rather than a place to sit.

HardiePlank HZ10 in ColorPlus went on to the published high-wind fastening schedule, blind nailed, with kick-out flashing at every roof-to-wall termination and head flashing over every opening. Grade, roofing, and horizontal-surface clearances were held so the board can dry from both faces.
